DAILY CHILD PROTECTION BRIEF · ONLINE SAFETY

When children face risk online, help should not be a maze

For cyberbullying, grooming, intimate-image abuse and fraud, children should not have to shuttle between platforms, schools, police and social services.

What is verified

CNA reported that the Child Rights Promotion Committee discussed online safety on 21 October. Participants noted that a child facing cyberbullying, fraud or grooming may need to deal with platforms, police, schools and social services at once. The Social and Family Affairs Administration said a proposed amendment to the Child and Youth Welfare and Protection Act includes online-safety, data and privacy mechanisms and remains open to views.

This is not a finished system, and it is not an excuse to shift risk onto children. The question is whether help can be understandable and link reporting, takedown, evidence preservation, victim protection and mental-health support.

Three practical steps today

Keep the URL, account name, time and screenshots; do not redistribute identifying images. Involve a trusted adult, school or professional to decide the next step. For suspected mistreatment, exploitation or another protection risk, consult or report to Taiwan’s 113 Protection Hotline. Call 110 first for immediate danger.

Why this is child protection

Online safety is more than telling a child to be careful. It needs age-appropriate design, data minimisation, usable complaint routes, and support that does not make a child repeatedly recount harm.
