DEFENDANT TESTIMONY · DAY 9
Ninthtrial hearing
Kaikai citizen-judge trial record | Tuesday, May 6, 2025
In one sentencing investigation, the defendants’ descriptions of responsibility, knowledge, deleted records and post-offense attitudes must be placed sentence by sentence within evidentiary limits.

This page concerns child maltreatment, death and sentencing evidence. The 102 Q&A pairs reconstruct Prison Watch’s public DAY9 record and five-page PDF tables. Apparent source typos or colloquial transcription are not rewritten in the full Q&A. Defendants’ statements are not judicial findings, and the artwork is not evidence.
Day 9 at a glance
Caixuan then Ruolin were questioned in the morning on living/work background, acceptance or denial of responsibility, rituals and settlement, awareness of injuries, deleted records and post-offense attitudes.
Do not merge two accounts into one
Each defendant’s answers are retained separately, then cross-checked on seven themes including responsibility, knowledge, deletion, rituals, role and repair. Each discrepancy returns to original answers; this page does not decide credibility for the court.
09:33–14:10 | How proceedings advanced

- Morning adjournment
Resumed 14:10 for victim-participation representatives’ statements and detention-extension proceedings. The source notes “did not attend in the afternoon.”
Four reading threads | Distinguish statement types first
Background and motive
Income, debt, family interactions and work pressure are self-reported; check separately against documents and other witnesses.
Admissions, denials and changes
Admitting binding, denying offenses, claiming misunderstanding and admitting prior lies concern different scopes and times.
Rituals, deletion and settlement
Religious rites, deleting records, family contact and financial preparation cannot be combined into a single “remorse.”
Objections and blank answers
When the court stops a question on sentencing opinion, the defendant’s answer remains blank; counsel’s or the judge’s words do not fill it.
Caixuan’s testimony | Financial motives to accepting responsibility
73 Q&A pairs. This first organizes her courtroom account; original wording remains in the Q&A section.
She said September–December 2023 income exceeded NT$50,000 monthly, her lifetime high. Fear of losing referrals and income contributed to incomplete requests for help or reporting.
She admitted not telling the truth to police, prosecutors and Dr. Hsu’s assessment, citing fear of criminal responsibility and inability to face it.
She said she attended all 12 ritual days. NT$300,000 comprised NT$100,000 each from foundation payments, a Ruolin loan and a temple-head discount. Counsel contacted the family, who did not want settlement.
Under the presiding judge’s follow-up, “Sorry, I was wrong” became “I should say I caused it”; she said causing the child pain and death was her fault.
“I should say I caused it.”— DAY9 · Presiding judge questions Caixuan
Ruolin’s testimony | Knowledge, deletion and continuing denial
29 Q&A pairs. She discussed rituals, assessment, LINE, family and work pressures while continuing to deny the offenses.
She said she had seen only the head and feeding method, learned of whole-body injuries only when the doctor illustrated them, and regretted not asking her sister or watching the child more.
She admitted inappropriate content and deleting it herself, saying she learned not to delete records.
She held childcare qualifications and was the registered person, but described in-law business/staffing pressures and denied necessarily leading.
She said the basin incident led to mistaken accomplice allegations. Under prosecution questioning she admitted only negligent injury: “I really did not hit him.”
“Yes, I really did not hit him.”— DAY9 · Prosecutor questions Ruolin

R08 | Business/in-law pressureR09 | Qualifications/registration
Self-report contextBoth discuss work/income pressure, but income, referrals, registration and actual decision power require separate objective verification.

R01 | Temple account/NT$300,000R02 | Says no reason explainedR21 | NT$100,000 loanR22 | Sometimes attended
Direct discrepancyCaixuan said she explained rites were for the child’s passage; Ruolin answered “No” to reasons being explained. Both are shown without deciding credibility.
C23 | Untruth in interviewsC25 | Lies during assessmentC50 | Admits insufficient candorC62 | Concealed from family/counsel
R05 | Inappropriate exchangesR06 | Deleted LINE herself
Separate admissionsOne admits concealment at multiple stages, the other deleting exchanges. Content, timing and legal evaluation cannot be merged.

R13 | Mistaken accomplice allegationR17 | “I really didn’t hit him”R18 | Conduct needs correctionR19 | Seemed reasonable thenR20 | Did not think that far
Core discrepancyCaixuan moved toward admitting harm in court; Ruolin continued denial. Admission, denial, remorse and responsibility scope require separate evaluation.

Showing 102 Q&A pairs
In 2022 you made traditional snacks at home. What was your income?
So-so.
More specifically.
Income came with orders, several a month. Average about NT$10,000, at most NT$17,000 at Dragon Boat Festival. That was my average share after splitting with Liu Ruo-
lin.
Why switch to childcare?
I cared for my younger sister’s child; a friend suggested it too.
Why not insist on refusing to care for A?
1. Placement slots: afraid future referrals would be harder. 2. Fewer cases/children would mean less income.
Any debt from 2022 to April 2023?
Mine was repaid. I don’t know much about my husband’s; I could not shoulder it and did not ask.
Why debt?
My husband borrowed in my name.
How much and how repaid?
Principal over NT$1 million; negotiated installments with the bank.
Since my son’s high-school years; I don’t remember well.
Whose house, and rent?
My sister’s. Over a year owing, over NT$100,000. She did not demand it, but I hoped to repay as much as possible and not owe her.
Snack income before 2022?
Before 2022 about NT$30,000-plus; 2022–April 2023 over NT$10,000; September–December 2023 over NT$50,000, the most in my life.
If the foundation said placements were a matter of affinity and it would not stop referrals, would you
dare speak up?
Yes.
Who drafted the ritual petition, and why?
I planned to write on paper. The temple head’s daughter suggested typing first to check suitability, then writing it down.
Its purpose?
I wanted to help A reach the Pure Land. Other devotees suggested other requests, but mainly I wanted the deities/Buddhas to lead A to the Western Paradise.
Why send it from Ruolin’s phone?
Police seized mine on December 24.
What did “the aunt’s failures” in the petition mean to you?
Report it to Buddha at the opening, burn it after completion.
The harm to him, making him lose his precious life.
Does binding him count too?
Yes.
Did you tell anyone the petition’s contents?
No.
Who arranged/suggested the ritual?
The temple head’s wife suggested it.
How many days, and did you attend daily?
Twelve days; every day.
Did you sincerely want to apologize?
Yes.
Why tell no one?
I lacked courage.
In detention you asked counsel to discuss settlement. What did the lawyer report
back?
They approached the family; the family did not want settlement.
Source of settlement funds?
I habitually carry insurance. I asked counsel to check the surrender reserve with my agent; the answer was NT$800,000–1 million.
You admitted binding and forced standing but not abuse, and did not tell police/prosecutors
the truth. Why admit it now?
Yes. Guilt grows daily, not lessens. I feared telling the truth because criminal responsibility frightened me.
Not frightened now?
Still, but I blame myself deeply.
Still lying to Dr. Hsu’s team last October?
Yes; I could not face it.
What would your religion say?
Reincarnation.
Will A one day seek retribution?
I don’t know.
Is religion one reason for admitting guilt?
Yes.
Where was the preschool you ran with Ruolin?
No.1, fourth floor; No.6, first floor; the two were connected, then separated.
All three sisters ran it together?
Yes.
Which children were accepted?
Age zero to the oldest preschool class, more than ten.
Fees?
NT$10,000 per child monthly.
You are experienced. How should one handle crying, mischief or noncompliance
in a child?
Soothe them, then inform parents.
Cooperation with the foundation?
First time, May that year.
Also for adoption?
Yes, but the mother later could not part and took the child back.
Why cooperate with the foundation?
The temple daughter and friend Ms. Lai, who cared for Garden of Hope children, suggested it. I called Garden of Hope: no children then, but I could start the
in-home care application. They also gave other organizations; I contacted them, the foundation second.
What training?
Primarily children and meeting their care needs.
Was A a “high-needs” child?
I haven’t heard that term.
Was self-collision by a child in your care a bad thing?
I thought so then.
Did you report to social worker Chen?
No, afraid no more children would be assigned.
Defense says A was hard to care for. Did you fully seek help?
No, afraid of losing income.
Did you bind or wrap other children?
No.
Were the unlawful methods used on A part of childcare teaching?
No, they were not.
Was NT$1,000 a day too little?
Yes.
You took A to Wanfang on December 24, 2023. Did the hospital ask you to contact his
family?
I took him. I could contact the social-worker contact point, not the family.
How did you feel?
Nervous, racing heartbeat; I don’t know.
Did you tell emergency doctors appetite and activity were normal on December 23?
I remember not meeting the doctor; only police asking whether I had reached anyone.
So emergency Dr. Huang was wrong?
I don’t know. I kept contacting the social worker; she might not attend but would contact family.
Mira testified that on December 26 you and your eldest sister’s son told her not
to tell police things, just say she saw nothing. Did that happen?
No. I said say what you saw, and say you don’t know if you don’t.
Regarding Dr. Huang and Mira’s accounts, did you obstruct investigation?
Perhaps; not candid or brave enough.
Did you tell counsel A was less active after noon?
Yes, I did.
Was the petition to avoid prison or to guide A to the
afterlife?
Both, perhaps.
You said only hearing Dr. Lu Li during trial taught you it could cause a child’s
death?
That is how I think.
Then what you told counsel about the petition?
That too.
The three crimes you admit carry ten years one month to life. What is your own
opinion?
Defendant’s answer field blank.
Defense objects: parties should not pronounce sentence.Presiding judge sustains objection: sentencing is the court’s work.
Did the foundation say how long finding adoptive parents would take?
No; I don’t know.
How long did you expect to be with A?
No way to anticipate it.
Were you not worried your care failures would cost you placements?
I did not think that far then.
Did counsel not show you the assessment report?
Yes, but I did not read closely.
Did you explain events to other relatives after the incident?
Busy with rituals, little time together; my son came home very late [apparent source typo], and my husband slept when tired of TV.
Did your sister-in-law send LINE to your husband from your dictated account?
Through my husband, I asked his elder sister to help find a lawyer.
Counsel wanted a process account, so on December 30 we met at a breakfast shop on Minquan East/West Road to dictate and send it.
Was what you told counsel and family untrue?
It should be, I suppose; there was concealment [fragmented source wording].
Do your three children live with you?
My son does, daughters not. They return for New Year and initiate video calls every month or two, sometimes minutes, sometimes over an
hour.
Do you chat/discuss matters with son and husband?
No, I don’t.
Chat with eldest sister?
She works, so not normally; on holidays, yes.
Does your son give living expenses? Have you asked?
No.
Apart from forehead and binding injuries, do you still think A’s
falls or behavioral problems caused them?
Sorry, I was wrong.
Answer the question.
I should say I caused it.
How do you feel after the trial so far?
The harm was too deep and cost his life. I cared for A with inappropriate conduct, causing such pain; it was my fault.
Where did ritual money come from?
NT$300,000 total: withdrew NT$100,000 from foundation money, Ruolin helped with NT$100,000, and I asked the temple head to waive NT$100,000 as charity.
Was Ruolin’s money a loan or gift?
Loan; that is what I told her.
Why need Ruolin’s agreement for rituals?
The temple wife suggested it, but I lacked money and did not agree immediately. Only Ruolin’s willingness to help made it possible.
Did you tell Ruolin why? Her response?
I said rites for the child’s passage; she said that was good.
How did the temple head explain the ritual?
She said a ritual cost NT$300,000. I asked her to negotiate lower. Later she came and said a child in your hands had, after all, simply died.
Was a reason given for holding it?
No.
How did the expert’s report and testimony make you
feel?
I was shocked. Caixuan had childcare experience/qualifications and her explanations made sense to me. Only when the doctor showed the injuries did I see they covered the whole body.
I had seen only the head and feeding method. Better awareness could have revealed it.
Anything you regret not doing?
Should have asked my sister more, cared about her condition and watched the child more.
On April 30 you were asked whether you deleted phone exchanges
with Caixuan?
Yes. First time facing this, very nervous, and some exchanges were inappropriate.
Did Caixuan tell you to delete, or yourself?
I deleted them myself. But I learned I should not delete these records.
Dr. Hsu says you struggle to express yourself?
I do struggle with parent communication; mostly I care for children.
Caixuan’s children said you led [source typo]?
The business was my mother-in-law’s, staffed by my family. If a parent complained, she scolded me. I felt pressure; she said my family stole money,
and kept telling me to drive out my family’s young people working there.
Complex relationships: not necessarily weaker?
I had the childcare qualification; Caixuan learned gradually later, so I was registered.
I had work pressure; privately when they were angry, I would stop speaking.
The report mentions a mutual friend of over thirty years [source typo]. How long?
Since she brought her child to us. She is a parent. Not thirty-plus, probably twenty-plus, not that long. She sells insurance and would ask
whether we wanted policies.
Experience caring for autism?
Helped as a student.
For example autistic children, or circumstances like A’s?
The foundation asked whether I wanted to; I wanted the challenge.
Do you think one isolated basin incident led to being
mistaken for an accomplice in abusing A?
That is what I think.
Another charged case involved a pacifier cord entanglement?
In that case a video was sent to the child’s grandfather.
After the January 21, 2025 assessment report, did counsel let you
see it?
I saw injuries, not clearly. Only when the doctor drew and explained each in court did I know.
Seen it before court?
Yes, not very closely.
Still wholly deny offenses, admitting only negligent injury?
Yes, I really did not hit him.
After the trial so far, was your sister’s claim of protecting A
right?
Some conduct needs correction; more classes are needed.
Should you have discouraged her via LINE? Any
regrets?
At the time I thought she was venting. She explained when we met; it seemed reasonable.
Might she vent anger on the child?
I did not think that far.
Did you lend your sister NT$100,000?
Yes, I did.
Attend rituals?
Sometimes; she went every day, I went when free.
When were you free?
Daytime, no particular plans; if she asked, we went together.
Other relatives attended?
Caixuan and I did; no one else.
Who were you closest to after divorce?
Eldest sister and Caixuan.
Relationship with your son?
Very good.
Do you chat?
When he comes home, having late-night snacks.
About what?
School matters.
When/what do you talk with sisters?
When we meet.
No matching Q&A.
